History of Robin Hood Airport

In 2005, this airport opened with the takeoff of a jet to Palma in Majorca. It looks good for this airport since within the first 3 months there had been 300,000 passengers that had used the facility. Within 60 weeks, more than a million passengers had gone through Robin Hood Airport. The airport is within easy range of over six million potential customers.

The official name for the airport is Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. That is because it serves both cities which are nearby, Doncaster and Sheffield. The former name for the airport was RAF Finningley. Finningley opened operations in 1936 and was known as the front line Bomber Command Base during the war. In 1996 some feared that the airport was closing permanently. However, Peel Holdings bought the airport in 1999 with the goal of using it for passenger service.

The airport has one of the longest runways in Northern England, making it useful for most types of planes.

The airport is licensed for public transport of passengers as well as for flight instruction. Most passenger flights are by Thomsonfly with some other small companies such as Air Europa, BH Air, Flybe, Flyglobespan, Ryanair, Thomas Cook and Pegasus.

Ryanair announced its services to Pisa and Girona. Flyglobespan flies to Toronto. Other cities served by the various carriers include Islamabad, Dubai and Belfast.
